Optina of deserts occupies a special place in the life of Orthodox Russia. Here, at the end of the XIX – beginning of the 20th century, Russian seniority survived the heyday, having a huge impact on the spiritual life of Russia of that time.
N.V. Gogol, who has repeatedly visited Optina of deserts, spoke about her inhabitants: “I have not seen such monks anywhere, with each of them, it seemed to me that everything heavenly says!” And everyone, who came to the elders, had the opportunity through them to come into contact with this heavenly, take a piece with him.
The book publishes the selected letters of the two great Optina elders-the Monk Makarii (Ivanova, 1788-1860) and the Monk Ambrose (Grenova, 1812-1891). Letters contain teachings addressed to people experiencing sorrow, doubts and difficulties, answers are offered to questions about the goals and objectives of Christian life.
