Alexey Alekseevich Kharlamov (1840-1925), a talented portrait, wrote most often beautiful “heads” of Italian and gypsies. Someone said that this was because he was hardly “specific” of portraits. However, it was the abstract “heads” that glorified the artist, thanks to them he received the title of academician, and he did not see the need to change his artistic addictions. A native of a peasant family, Kharlamov lived most of his life in Paris. There he made friends with Turgenev, and this contributed to the growth of his popularity. He even illustrated the “noble nest” of the great writer. When the fashion for the “heads” passed, the artist was impoverished, lived almost in solitude. Art historians believe that A.A. Kharlamov in his own way contributed to the growth of the prestige of Russian painting.
