The book is devoted to the study of science fiction in the English novel of the late XIX-XX centuries. For the first time in domestic literary criticism, fantastic in English prose is shown in a wide historical and cultural context and as a combination of aesthetic phenomena created in line with national artistic tradition. The basis of the book is literary portraits of seventeen English prose writers. Some of them are W. Morris, B. Stoker, J.R.R. Tolkien – familiar to the Russian reader, and in this case, knowledge of them will expand and complement, others are Danseini, M. Norton, M. Frein – are much less familiar, the third names of E. Hope, W.Kh. Hodgson – introduced into scientific use for the first time.
