Medieval Novgorod has always attracted the attention of researchers. For some, he was revered as the birthplace of the Russian monarchy. For others, he became a symbol of republican aspirations and a cradle of veche democracy. Large -scale archaeological research of Novgorod in recent decades has repeatedly multiplied the sum of sources on the history of this city and state. The opening of birch bark letters, the number of which today exceeds 1000 copies, allowed to hear the voices of the Novgorodians who lived in the XI-XV centuries, and solve many problems that were previously considered controversial. The mechanism of the emergence of Novgorod boyars and boyar land ownership became clear. The stages of the formation of republican state governance bodies are clarified.
