The book analyzes the vicissitudes of the classical, coming from Descartes, understanding of the reflection associated with the prerequisite about the initial identity of the cognitive subject and the subject of self -knowledge. The author proves that even those thinkers who seem to refuse classical reflection (existentialists, analytical philosophers, supporters of the communicative approach, postmodernists, discussing the “death of the subject”), are in a implicit way depending on it. The critical analysis is the basis for the development of the non -reflexive concept of self -knowledge, which should overcome the dead ends of traditional theory.
