The book included the story “Children of the Dungeon”, as well as the diaries (1917-1921) of an outstanding Russian writer, public figure and human rights activist V.G. Korolenko (1853-1921).
The story “Children of the dungeon” is a story about the difficult life of the city poor in tsarist Russia, which is shown through the prism of children’s destinies. The only outlet for the “children of the dungeon” was friendship – she brightened up the last days of dying Marusi and helped the main character find mutual understanding with her father.
Of particular interest to the modern reader are the diaries of the writer, in which he very accurately and accurately characterizes the situation that has developed in Russia during the period of revolutionary shifts. Korolenko, who called himself a “non -partisan socialist” and always defended the powerless and oppressed, did not accept the Bolshevik reorganization of the world – there was too much senseless cruelty and violence against a person. As a testament, lines from the diary of the Humanist writer sound: “We must return the value of human life and the human person.”
