The novel “Cats-Mouse”, the second part of the trilogy, caused an ambiguous and extremely violent reaction in the German society of the sixties, since it touched on the painful topics of the national past and the guilt complex. Her hero, a gymnasium student by Joachim Malke, is obsessed with a dream of earning a knightly cross in the war and, returning home, to speak with a speech to the students of his native gymnasium. The former classmate Malke, persecuted by memories and remorse, analyzes his participation in his ridiculous and tragic fate.
