Alexey Viktorovich Vostrikov – a famous historian, publicist, employee of the scientific library named after Gorky St. Petersburg State University. His book is dedicated to the mysterious phenomenon of a duel in Russian history and culture. It is based on memoir literature, letters, royal decrees and manifestos, as well as descriptions of a duel in the works of Russian classics. The book consistently tells about the origins, legal status, reasons, ritual of a duel, about the famous braeters and duels.
“We hope,” the author writes, “that the reader, having met the heroes of our study, will be able to imagine what a person feels when he receives a slap in the face when he calls an opponent to a duel when he writes a farewell letter, when he stands at the barrier in front of a pistol aimed at him. We hope that a Russian culture researcher of the XVIII -XIX centuries, even if he does not agree with our conclusions, nevertheless finds it for himself for himself. The material that will highlight a small beam with a thin ray, but still a very important point in history. ”
