The novel “Amendments”, published in 2001, brought forty -year -old Jonathan Franzen World fame and put it on a par with the classics of American literature. The book dispersed with millions of print runs, received the US National Book Prize and was translated into 35 languages.
The drama of fathers and children in the scenery of America of the 90s turned out to be clear and interesting to a variety of readers. This is a postmodern satire, written in the traditions of a classic novel – with love for a character and attention to detail, with juicy visual images and a desire for reliability.
The first Russian edition of “Amendments” was a real event. Since then, the new bestseller of Franzen – “Freedom”, a portrait of the American Society of the 2000s has been published in Russia. A look at the “amendments” through the prism of “freedom” is a great way to understand how America has changed, and in a new way to evaluate the skill of one of its best fiction writers.
