The history of Orthodox monasticism is, among other things, a description of the life of the most significant ascetics of the piety of certain peoples and at the same time – the history of the most significant in the church and public life of Orthodox monasteries. Russian historical science in the person of its prominent representatives made a significant contribution to the study of the history of Orthodox monasteries, so we can talk about the existence of a certain scientific tradition in Russian historiography. From the end of the 18th century, studies dedicated to the monasteries of the Russian Empire have appeared, in the 19th century, these works become even more complete and circumstances. One of the reasons for the development of such (partly reference) literature is the expansion of pilgrimage in holy places.
