The German literature historian F. Gundolf (1880-1931) wrote this book in 1911 on the basis of a new literary method, according to which all the actual historical and philological material is only the pre-human science, while the main thing for research is the symbolic interpretation of the writer, his personality. Gundolf showed that only thanks to Goethe German became rich enough to express Shakespeare; Thanks to romanticism, he gained the necessary freedom, and thanks to Schlegel – the ability to self -denial.
