For 250 years, the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg has become one of the largest museums in the world, numbering more than three million exhibits. The treasures of world art and culture are stored and exhibited in the buildings of the former imperial residence, which make up a magnificent architectural ensemble, the center of which is the Winter Palace.
The Hermitage was founded in 1764 by Empress Catherine the Great. In order to accommodate the collections it acquired, the residence ensemble was expanded: the buildings of small and old Hermitages, as well as the Hermitage Theater, arose near the palace. A significant contribution to the enrichment of the museum was made by the son of Catherine Paul I, her grandchildren Alexander I and Nicholas I. In the reign of Nicholas I, the interiors of the Winter Palace acquired an updated form after large -scale restoration work, which was required by the devastating fire of 1837.
