In the second volume of the 30-volume collected works, the novel “In the First Circle” is printed. In the “Divine Comedy” Dante placed in “Circle of the First”, the lightest circle of hell, ancient sages. In Solzhenitsyn, prisoners and scientists are brought together from different camps to a special tuli – a research institute, nicknamed the “Sharashka”, where they are developing secret telephony, a state order. The dense action of the novel fits only on the three December days of 1949 and unfolds, in addition to the “sharashki”, in the office of the Minister of State Security, in the student hostel, in the country of Stalin, and in the expanses of the Moscow Region, and at the “reception” in the house of the Stalinsky nobleman, and in the arrested boxes of the Lubyanka. The dynamic plot develops around the search for a diplomat who issued a state secret. The interweaving of bright characters, remarkable minds, a love craving for free employees of the institute, disputes and thoughts about the fate of Russia, about the moral position and personal participation of everyone in the history of the country.
