This publication is a biography of the famous Japanese commander Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582). The author of this study, J.P. Lamers, sets himself the task of “avoiding both anachronisms of moral judgments and psychological analysis.” The main attention in the book is focused on “Nobunaga’s actions, not his soul.” It is this author’s attitude that allows the Dutch scientist to draw an objective historical portrait of the famous Japanese commander. Trying to consider the personality of the “Japanese tyrant” in accordance with the standards of the period, the embodiment of which was Nobunaga himself, the scientist recreates on the pages of his book the picture of the last stage of the era of the fighting kingdoms. The extensive body of sources, the original methodology for checking various evidence of the era and meticulous work with facts – this is far from a complete list of the advantages of this book that make it the best of the existing biographies of the Nabunaga.
