Gloomy time of the oprichnina. Tsar Ivan the Terrible cunning, cruel and unpredictable. The main character of the novel is convinced that the king is a representative of God’s will on earth, and therefore disobedience to him is unacceptable. But every time the prince is faced with obvious injustice, innate honesty prevails over the rules. And then he almost unconsciously acts not according to the rules, but according to conscience. The king himself appreciates him for “a truthful heart and a tongue that does not know cunning.” And the holy fool Vasya recognizes in the prince the spiritual brother: “I see all your heart. You have clean, clean, one naked truth; you and I are both holy fools!”
