“The ability of the island” is a book primarily about love. Welbek himself, who received the Interelier award for her (2005), considers her the best of all written. Having stated in an interview that he is “not a storyteller of stories”, Welbek nevertheless tells here, in his characteristic ironic manner, many non-trivial stories intertwining into an exciting plot: about the totalitarian sects, about show business and the fate of distant descendants of humanity, to which our current emotions and actions are projected. The main character, a pop artist, first successfully performs with sketches of his own essay, then just as successfully removes porn films. Power over the rapidly growing audience encourages him to analyze the state of minds and embark on risky experiments. From these experiments, the background of the book grows – fantastic, surprisingly harmoniously rafting with the rigid realism of the first.
