Theodore Dreiser is the famous American writer and public figure. His works, affecting acute social problems, enjoyed great success among readers around the world and still arouse the most keen interest. The novel “Jenny Gerhardt” (1911), which tells the story of a girl from a poor family, is considered the most poetic in the work of the Dreiser. Criticism did not immediately appreciate the talent of the writer: his works were called immoral, cynical and defaming the American dream. In 1930, Sinclair Lewis in his Nobel speech said that the theodor Dreiser was rightfully the prize, because it was he who “freed American literature from Victorian timidity and directed it along the path of a bold, honest and passionate image of life.”
