In a monographic study, for the first time, a critical analysis of the main corps of historical sources is given about the “strange act” of the second lieutenant Y. I. Rostovtsev (later a major statesman), which occurred during the political crisis of the interior of 1825. The book is dedicated to an event that still causes lively disputes in historiography. The main versions of Rostovtsev’s actions, the contradictions and errors of the existing explanations are understood, the mechanism of the formation of historical myths around the event on December 12 is revealed. The author substantiates a new vision of the “act” of Rostovtsev, his relationship with the leaders of the Decembrist conspiracy and the authorities in the person of Emperor Nicholas I. Many first attracted and little -known documents were used to shed light on the true meaning of Rostovtsev’s action.
